The 'Shark Gill' Brake System has been tested by shooters and... the results have been better than anticipated by far. Inquiries into the system have been tremendous and we thank every one for their patience while we put together this page.
Our 'Shark Gill" brake design has proven to be very effective
in reducing recoil on some of the largest calibers available. The
brake is made to fit your barrel regardless of contour. We have
designed two different sizes for either the Encore or Contender
(We Can Fit To Other Bbls. also). One will work with Full Bull,
and the other is for the Contoured smaller diameter barrels. The
only consideration when trying to keep the outside diameter down
is the result will be a smaller surface area left for blast
screen effect.
All brakes are 2.375(exterior) long regardless of barrel
contour.
The removable brake is about .1 larger in diameter than the end of the barrel. Finish is blasted, then black oxided, the barrel is just machine finished, though it can be cold blued unless you want the whole barrel blasted. Affected length for attachment is less than half inch. The original length is only affected for the new crown cut. A 'muzzle cap' is provided to protect the threads if one desires to shoot their barrel/gun without the brake.

Internal brakes are easier to build into new barrels as we can
cut the length to compensate for the brake system. On customer
supplied barrels the affected length, internally, is about
2.1"
One innovation that sets the 'SharkGill' System apart from the
others is the ability to easily clean the 'gills' on the internal
brake system. Until now this has been a tedious chore for those
who shoot a lot. With the OTTLLC 'SharkGill' brake system the
shooter simply removes the muzzle cap to access the internal
chamber for easy cleaning.
Whether using the Removable or Internal System the air flow can be felt if shooting from a bench with partitions along the sides. As far as muzzle flash? I have not noticed a significant amount on the ones I was able to watch. This does not mean the higher capacity cases don't flash. Noise? They are not louder. It changes the tone, but it is not louder. As time allows we will test and prove this point in the future.
Jerry got his barrel the other day and loaded up some 458 mag
loads, NOT LOTT loads. Went to the range and got a few friends to
try it but, no one wanted to shoot it with out the brake!
So being of sound mind he tried it with a 300 gr. Said it hurt!
Imagine that!
Next he tried some 405's and then... factory 510gr. (these are
still win mag loads) The 510er flew out of his hands and he had
to jump to get it.
All the guys asked what the hell was that? He just laughed and
said, "No way will I shoot anything bigger than a 300gr. with the
brake or with out, because it hurts."
Anyway, hurt or not just like me you did a great job and the
brake is very effective.
Oh ya. Next Sunday he will have a sillouette match and he is
going to shoot a 45 rd match with it.
It is truly awesome. So much power. If ya can handle
it........John
Reduction percentage wise? Not sure. Do know this tho... that
a stout load I had before things went hay wire, shot from the 90
degree off the bag would raise it between 11 & 12 oclock. With
the brake on. If it was off? Probably over my head and out of
my hands. I would say it will reduce at least 65 %.......for the
big boys.
Jerry said the same thing, He shot a 300 win mag. with out the
brake, hurt his hand. Shot another one with it on, and noticed a
big diffrence. Yes, at least 65 %.on our rnds. That is very good
considering what we are shooting. Shoot a 300gr out of the Lott
without a brake and you are asking for big trouble and a sore
hand! ...lol! You did a great job....John
Shooting a T/C Encore chambered for the 405 Win. my range
sessions were limited to 20 rounds. My hand and wrist would hurt
for 2-3 days after each session.
After having the 'OTT SharkGill' Brake System installed my 1st
range session consisted of 90+ rounds of 405 Win. the best part
being no pain felt afterwards.
Shooting a T/C Encore chambered in 300 Win Mag. turned out to
be quite a handful. 12 rounds of 180gr factory loads resulted in
a black and blue hand for about 2 weeks. Recoil was tremendous
and if I didn't hang on tight was apt to lose the gun
completely.
After having a removable 'OTT SharkGill' Brake System installed I
can shoot full power loads indefinitely. Recoil, depending on the
load used, is comparable to a .223 or.243 the muzzle barely lifts
off the rest, off hand shooting is quite managable.
